Basmati has been traditionally growing in the select areas along the Himalayan foothills. Due to its extremely low acreage ,its yield was poor and consequently, it was not as widely available as it is today. But the story changes after the 1960's when the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, popularly known as the PUSA Institute, under the leadership of Dr. VP Singh worked towards scientifically developing newer varieties of Basmati. By leveraging the public-private partnership model PUSA institute developed many robust high-yielding varieties of Basmati like PUSA-1121 which are now the most popular and most grown varieties of Basmati rice in the selective regions of India.
